SMED: a scientific society with governance as data

The Moroccan Society of Digestive Endoscopy — SMED — advances digestive endoscopy in Morocco: continuing medical education, research, clinical guidelines, congresses and exchange with international specialists.

What the society had before was a poorly built site that presented its leadership as typed pages — and that is precisely the arrangement this rebuild exists to end. A mandate ends, a commission changes its coordinator, and every page naming them is quietly wrong until somebody notices. Holding governance as data rather than as copy needs a real application underneath it, so the site was rebuilt on Laravel, with Filament as the panel the society runs it from.

Governance as data

• Mandates, with their members, so leadership pages change when the mandate does rather than when someone remembers.

• The board of directors, the executive board and the honorary president as distinct roles.

• Commissions with their coordinators, and internal and external members held separately.

• An editorial committee with its editor-in-chief.

The scientific side

• Clinical cases, published for the membership.

• Scientific production, and a "read for you" digest of the literature.

• Abstract submissions from members.

• An interactive agenda, past events and continuing-education programmes.

Twenty years earlier I built the Moroccan Society of Cardiology's first website in hand-written PHP. Same kind of institution, same problems — members, publications, events — and a useful measure of how far the tooling has come.

Built by my team at Digiton, where I was CTO. I set the architecture, reviewed the work, and owned SEO, performance, responsiveness and the deploy.
